What Is Birdies for Charity and How Does It Even Work??

The John Deere Classic is one of the biggest events in the Quad City area, and for good reason! It’s a golf outing that sees tens of thousands of spectators each year, and their Birdies for Charity program has raised $93.6 million since it started in 1971 ($12.8 million total in 2017 alone!), ranking the John Deere Classic #1 in per-capita donations across the entire PGA tour. Here’s how it works:

You can give a flat donation or pledge one cent or more per birdie

To give a one-time flat donation, you can click here, type “895” in the search box and follow the directions for payment. That’s it!

If you want to pledge, you can download and print a pledge card or find a location that offers them in your area here. When you pledge through Birdies for Charity, you’re promising to give a certain amount (one cent or more) for each birdie scored during the John Deere Classic. You can also guess the number of birdies to be scored for a chance to win a 2-year lease on a 2018 Lexus NX. Fun fact: there were 1,918 birdies scored at last year’s tournament!

Completed pledge forms should be returned to the Birdies office (15623 Coaltown Rd, East Moline, IL 61244) no later than the Friday of tournament week, which is July 13th this year. Then, after the tournament, all pledges will be invoiced.

The John Deere Foundation will match ALL donations by 5-10%

Here’s the cool part: 100% of your donation goes to your charity of choice! The John Deere Classic makes this possible by covering any administrative fees. The giving doesn’t stop there - every donation is also matched by 5-10% by the John Deere Foundation.

The match is made possible by the John Deere Classic, the John Deere Foundation, and many generous donors who give to the Birdies for Charity Bonus Fund. A fun way to help contribute to the Bonus Fund is by attending the Charity Concert, featuring country singer Lee Brice, at the Waterfront Convention Center in downtown Bettendorf at 7pm on July 11th. You can find more information about that concert here.

At the end of October, donations are announced and distributed

Here’s where your donation makes an impact (and where prizes are given out!). This year’s Check Distribution is held on October 31st. Charities will receive 100% of their donations and their 5-10% match, and the grand prize winner of a 2-year lease on a 2018 Lexus NX will be announced! Other prizes include a John Deere riding mower and John Deere Classic merchandise.

Now that you know all about Birdies for Charity and why it’s important to charities in the Quad Cities, what are you waiting for? Make your mark on the QC community with a Birdies for Charity donation today!
