Camp Hand in Hand

Camp Hand in Hand was the first program we ever offered. Back in 2000, two families—Mark and Vinnie Smith and Dave and Joanie Steil—wanted their kids with disabilities to have a chance to do what most kids get to do in the summer: go to camp. They figured a one-week summer camp where kids of all abilities could hang out, try new things, and just have fun together was a great place to start. So they made it happen.

What started as a small idea has grown into a two-week summer camp that now hosts around 70 campers each July. Camp is open to kids with and without disabilities, and we work hard to make sure everyone has what they need to feel comfortable and included.

How It Works

Each camper is paired with a buddy—either a trained staff member or volunteer—who provides support based on the camper’s needs. Some kids need help getting around or communicating, and others just like having someone familiar by their side. Pairing each camper with a buddy helps us make sure everyone gets to fully take part in the day.

We keep the focus on typical camp activities that are fun and accessible. Campers get to try:

  • Archery

  • Arts and crafts

  • Swimming

  • Canoeing

  • Fishing

  • S’mores making

  • Group games and themed activities

We adapt activities as needed, so everyone can participate in a way that works for them. It’s casual, active, and social—just a good time outdoors with friends.

Why Families Keep Coming Back

Camp Hand in Hand gives kids a chance to build confidence, make new friends, and spend time in a setting that’s supportive. Parents tell us their kids look forward to it all year—some campers have been coming back for over a decade.

Whether it’s your child’s first camp experience or something they’ve done before, we work hard to make it a great couple of weeks.
