Teens with Purpose

Program Overview

Teens with Purpose (TWP) is a program that bridges the gap between our school-age childcare services and our adult dayhab program, People with Purpose. Tailored specifically for younger teens with disabilities, TWP supports participants as they transition into more independent roles—both within their communities and in their personal development. The program is hosted during after-school time during the school year but we also offer the Teens with Purpose program during the summer as well.

While the program retains the energy, fun, and engaging structure that families love about Hand in Hand, it also introduces new layers of responsibility, decision-making, and real-world experiences. TWP gives teens the space to explore who they are, what matters to them, and how they can meaningfully contribute to their community.

Core Focus Areas

  • Community Engagement
Participants take part in regular outings that offer hands-on experiences in the community. Whether it’s volunteering, exploring local spaces like the library or bowling alley, or simply practicing social skills in public settings, these activities are designed to build confidence and a sense of belonging.

  • Skill Building
TWP is all about preparing teens for greater independence. Staff work one-on-one and in small groups to help participants work toward personalized goals. This often includes:

    • Cooking simple meals and snacks

    • Practicing kitchen and cleaning safety

    • Grocery shopping with a list and budget

    • Learning how to follow routines and manage time

  • Leadership & Self-Advocacy
Teens have opportunities to make choices and express their preferences—helping them take ownership of their experience. TWP encourages self-expression and helps teens find their voice in a supportive environment.

  • Purposeful Fun
While there’s a strong focus on growth, the heart of TWP is joy. Participants spend time doing activities they enjoy—like visiting the arcade, creating art, or playing games with peers—because fun matters, too.
