Volunteer Spotlight: Izzy

“I’m 14 years old and have volunteered at the summer camp and am now volunteering in the rec program. I was inspired by helping in a STEM class for special needs at my school and heard about Hand in Hand from my dad. I started volunteering during the first week of camp on July 2023.

My favorite memory so far is hanging out with my buddy Grace during camp. Along with Hand in Hand, I also help out with my school’s Special Olympics team. I enjoy getting to work with the participants and getting to know the staff.

I think my efforts make a difference because it gives them a fun chance at Hand in Hand. I am motivated by the chance to make the participants’ day by helping out. My volunteer experience has expanded my perspective on inclusion because when I hang out with them I get to work with participants that are special in their own way.

For anyone wanting to volunteer, just go for it. The participants and staff will love to have you and if it isn’t for you at least you gave it a chance. I plan on volunteering for more programs as I get older and eventually working at Hand in Hand.

It’s their world, we’re just living in it.”
