15 Years of Chili

As we gear up for another exciting Chili Cook-Off, we’re taking a walk down memory lane to explore the rich history of the Chili Cook-Off and what makes it a cherished tradition for the organization and families and friends alike.

Origins of the Cook-Off

In 2010, when our board members and founders were dreaming up ways to spark some excitement and raise funds, Spin Williams, one of our spirited board members, along with his wife Mindy, tossed out the idea of a Chili Cook-Off. And just like that, the chili magic began!

We hustled to sign up chili teams, secure sponsors, and gather goodies for our silent auction. Our very first shindig went down at the Starlite Ballroom, a sprawling 11,250 square foot spot at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. Picture this: 700 folks crammed in, feeling the excitement of our first Chili Cook-Off! We even suffered a few power outages from all the roasters being plugged in at once.

“We were in the Starlite Ballroom and we just packed the place,” said founder, Mark Smith. “It was a winning the superbowl kind of feeling.... we were flying high.”

We had 19 chili teams battling it out, and guess who stole the show? Happy Joe’s rocked the house with their Elvis-inspired Graceland chili, decked out in full Elvis gear! Then there was our own Vinnie Smith and Joan Clements, serving up some Green Bay Packer-themed chili that scored big.

We pulled in around $20,000 and had a whopping 650-700 guests. Mark couldn't have said it better: “It gave us organizational momentum. It really captured people’s attention, and everyone had a good time. It raised some money which we really needed,” said Mark.

At the time, Hand in Hand was snugly tucked into the top floor of Tessa’s Place, but thanks to the Chili Cook-Off, we doubled our space and were able to move into the basement!

With this momentum, it only took us four short years to outgrow the Starlite Ballroom and move on to the Fair Center. We were so nervous about being able to fill the massive 30,000 square foot space but here we are today with over 1,200 attendees each year, raising $103,000.

What to Expect This Year

So, what can you expect when you attend the Hand in Hand Chili Cook-Off? Prepare to tantalize your taste buds with an array of mouthwatering chili creations, each simmering with its own unique blend of flavors and spices. From traditional recipes passed down through generations to bold innovations that push the boundaries of chili excellence, there’s something for every palate to savor.

We’ve got 18 teams competing this year. We’ve got several crowd favorites coming back this year as well as new teams like What BBQ & Bar, Coal Valley Fire Protection District, Echo CO 334 BSB, Iowa 80 Recruiting Team, and Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. We’ll also have plenty of silent auction items, raffle items, and kid’s activities including David Casas Magic and The Snap Wagon Mobile Photo Booth.

But the Chili Cook-Off is more than just a feast for the senses. Behind the festivities lies a deeper purpose: to empower children and adults of all abilities through inclusive programs and unwavering support. Every spoonful of chili, every smile exchanged, and every dollar raised contributes to Hand in Hand’s vision of creating a more inclusive Quad Cities.

As one of our long-time volunteers, Steve said, “Because it is so popular with the Quad City community, it has evolved into a FRIEND raiser. The Cook-Off is not just a fun way to spend a cold winter day. It helps spread the word about the important work Hand in Hand is doing and let's families that might need Hand in Hand services know where to go.”

So, mark your calendars for Saturday, February 3rd and spread the word! The Hand in Hand Chili Cook-Off awaits, ready to welcome you with open arms and steaming bowls of chili goodness. Whether you’re a seasoned chili aficionado or simply looking for a day of family fun, there’s no better place to be than right here, among friends old and new.
